In 2012 students at Cascade High School’s Environmental Arts Club began reclaiming overgrown greenhouses, clearing blackberry vines and other growth. The students then built a self-sustaining food system at the sites using nutrient-rich water from fish tanks to feed the plants. Funds for the project were secured with grants from major companies and a partnership with a local non-profit. The club has grown vegetables for the school cafeteria, and each year new students learn how to grow food and keep the system running.
